WEST RUSK TOPS WASKOM, 41-37

The West Rusk Raiders have advanced to the third round of the University Interscholastic League’s Class 3A, Division II playoffs, having beaten Waskom, 41-37, Thursday night at Tatum ISD’s Eagle Stadium. The Raiders’ Geremiah Smith scored with 11 seconds left to put the Raiders in front for good after the defense forced Waskom to punt and quarterback Andon Mata moved the Raiders downfield very quickly. Above: Early in the game, West Rusk’s Keyshawn Lewis strips the ball from Waskom’s Chris. The ball was picked up by the Raiders’ Tate Winings and returned for a touchdown. West Rusk (10-2) will play either Hooks (9-2) or Harmony (6-5) next week in round three. That game was to be played later Friday, after the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald.
