A pair of Kilgore-area high school football teams begin their playoff journeys tonight.
West Rusk will seek to open the University Interscholastic League’s Class 3A, Division II playoffs with a win over Chisum, a Paris-area school, tonight in Pittsburg, a 7:30 p.m. start.
Coach Nick Harrison’s Raiders are seeking their seventh straight win – they haven’t lost since the non-district schedule, a Sept. 18 loss at home to Malakoff.
Chisum (5-5), the Mustangs, lost three of their final four games, including a 53-27 loss in last weekend’s regular season finale at Daingerfield.
The West Rusk-Chisum winner will face either Anderson-Shiro (6-4) or Hughes Springs (5-3) next week in the second, or area, round.
Leverett’s Chapel begins the UIL six-man football playoffs tonight, facing Saint Jo in Savoy, a 7 p.m. kick. LC is 6-2 this season, and had an open date in the regular season finale weekend last week. Savoy is 8-1, and has won four straight, having thoroughly whipped Perrin-White, 64-0, last week.
The winner of LC-Saint Jo will meet either Coolidge or Blum in next weekend’s second round.
Kilgore, of course, plays tomorrow night, hosting Splendora in the first round of the UIL Class 4A, Division I playoffs, a 7 p.m. kickoff.
