In one of the final tune-ups before district play begins next Tuesday, the Kilgore High School soccer Bulldogs edged Lindale last night, a 1-0 win here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium.
Kilgore and the Eagles played 67 minutes of scoreless, defensive soccer before Tray Epps of KHS punched in a goal.
“Wanya McIntyre beat two down the left side and put the ball on Tray Epps’ feet for the put-in,” Kilgore coach Tom Wait explained.
Wait also complimented goalkeeper Daniel Estrella for the shutout.
Kilgore has one more game – Friday at Palestine, with junior varsity starting at 5 p.m. – before District 16-4A play starts. Both of Kilgore’s soccer varsity teams, boys and girls, open their 16-4A schedules at Sabine on Tuesday, starting with the girls game at 5.
The Lady Bulldogs were off last night after losing a 1-0 contest to Henderson on Monday.
Soccer is the only sport in which Kilgore and Sabine are in the same district – the Cardinals’ sports are mostly at the 3A level, but in soccer, for proximity’s sake and other reasons, the UIL allows programs to “play up” a classification, hence Sabine playing in a 4A district.
Also in the district are Spring Hill, Gladewater, Tatum and Waskom – those are all 3A schools in other sports.
