Things looked bleak for Kilgore High School volleyball at one point this season, right after losing their District 16-4A opener at Henderson in four sets.
But just about two weeks later, things look better – a lot better.
Kilgore has won three straight since then, and is now 3-1 in 16-4A after sweeping Cumberland Academy in Kilgore on Friday afternoon, 25-14, 25-18, 25-10.
The Lady Bulldogs, coached by Madeline Harris, have evened off their record (they’re 12-12 overall) and were to play at Chapel Hill on Tuesday night, following the deadline for this print edition of the News Herald. See an update online now at kilgorenewsherald.com.
Against Cumberland, Kilgore was impressive. Miah Thomas had nine kills, and Jada Abercrombie and Lauren Couch each had seven. Skye Cotton and Alexis Anderson each had five; and Skyler Day had one. Ashton Vallery had 31 assists. Thomas had 15 digs; Couch had 12, and Abercrombie, 11. A’viana McIntyre had nine, and Day had eight.
Kilgore hosts district-leading Bullard on Friday, starting at 4:30 p.m. It’s Kilgore Middle School night.
Sabine: Sabine still hasn’t lost in District 16-3A, and only has five losses period. But Harmony did test the Lady Cardinals on Friday, the first district opponent to take Sabine past three sets.
It took Sabine all five, but they won, 25-12, 23-25, 26-24, 24-26, 15-12.
Aubree McCann had 18 kills; Mikinzi Cantrell had 14, and Samantha Bell had 11. Sierrah Richter and Maddie Furrh each had five; Ryanne Stuart had three, and Caitlin Bates, one.
Richter had three aces; McCann and Cantrell each had three blocks; Bell had 13 digs, and McCann, 12; Ally Gresham and Cantrell each had 11, and Bates had nine; Furrh and Richter each had five; and Richter had 52 assists in the five sets.
The Lady Cardinals (29-5), coached by Kristen Reaves, are 5-0 in district play, and were to play at Troup on Tuesday night; they’ll play at Winona on Friday, starting at 4:30.
