Fall tennis has made it to the end of its regular season, and Kilgore High School’s tennis team is the 2019 District 16-4A champion.
Kilgore won all 19 matchups against Henderson on Tuesday, finishing off the regular season as the district champs, and securing a first-round bye. Like football, or volleyball, or any other team sport, the Bulldogs win or lose as a team in fall – and then they play a more individually-goaled season in spring.
They’ll be off the first round of the 4A playoffs, and then take on either Van or Alvarado in the area, or second round. Kilgore coach Jason Maroney said Thursday that nothing is officially set up for a location or a day with either Van or Alvarado, just that it will be next week, and site and day are to be determined.
As mentioned, Kilgore’s team won every single matchup with Henderson. In boys singles, Jack Tyra beat Tim Cooley, 6-3, 6-3; Kalen Ray beat Justin Roberts, 6-2, 6-2; Kelton Kelley beat Jacob Kendall, 6-1, 6-0; Chase Borders beat Nikhil Pai, 6-2, 6-0; Bryce Borders beat Taylor White, 8-2; Hunter Wilcox beat Ethan McCarthy, 8-1; and Tanner Bonnette beat his opponent by the same score in an extra match.
In girls singles play, Cheyanne Jones beat Emili Simmons, 6-1, 6-0; Mary Bess Mercer beat Leah Harvey, 6-0, 6-2; Madalynn Parrymore beat Brooke Linthicum, 6-0, 6-1; Avery LeMaire beat Hannah Mansinger, 8-2; Estrella Chavarria beat Sarah Cruz, 8-1; Samantha Linkinhoker beat Jacey Jarrell, 8-1; and Connie Chavarria won, 8-1, in an extra match.
Kilgore dominated in doubles play, too. Jones and Estrella Chavarria won their match over Simmons and Harvey, 6-0, 6-3; Mercer and LeMaire beat Linthicum and Mansinger, 6-2, 6-1; and Parrymore and Linkinhoker beat Cruz and Emely Gomez, 6-0, 6-1.
For the boys, Tyra and Ray teamed to beat Cooley and Roberts, 6-0, 6-2; Kelley and Chase Borders beat Kendall and Pai, 6-1, 6-0; and Bryce Borders and Wilcox teamed to beat McCarthy and Mason Craig, 6-0, 6-2.
Connie Chavarria and Bonnette won their mixed doubles match over Taylor White and Alisha Collins, 6-1, 6-1.
Kilgore was ranked 17th in the state in Class 4A, in the last poll on Texastenniscoaches.com.
Maroney, assisted by Rhonda Fletcher, is one of Kilgore’s longest-tenured head coaches. Maroney and boys track coach Phillip Lane are both in their 14th season.
