This state-ranked thing is treating Sabine High School volleyball pretty well. In fact, they’re having such a good time, the Lady Cardinals decided to continue the ride.
Sabine won its University Interscholastic League Class 3A second-round (area round) playoff game Monday night, knocking Atlanta from the postseason in four sets, 25-21, 25-21, 22-25, 25-14) at Hallsville High School.
As a result, coach Tara Wait’s Lady Cardinals move on to round three, where they’ll meet Tatum on Thursday night at 6:30 p.m., again at Hallsville.
After setting a single-season record for wins a year ago, but having a rather early playoff exit, Sabine appears to have made a pact within the locker room to go all the way this year. And they’ve had a lot of success. They’re ranked third in the state in 3A in the latest Texas Girls Coaches Association poll, and their only loss is to the top-ranked team in 2A, Beckville, months ago.
Sabine got 25 kills, nine blocks and nine digs from Aubree McCann, and 50 assists from Sierrah Richter, who also had eight aces, three kills and 17 digs. Ryanne Stuart had 14 kills, eight digs and a block.
Also for Sabine, Maddie Furrh had six kills, nine digs and an ace; Cale Brown had five kills, four digs and two blocks; Caitlin Bates had six kills, an ace, 20 digs and two blocks; Callie Sparks had an ace and a dig, and Ally Gresham had 12 digs and an ace.
