The Region XIV Conference softball tournament at Angelina College in Lufkin, in which Kilgore College is a participant, has been postponed until Sunday in lieu of more anticipated rain and bad weather.

It was originally supposed to have been started on Friday.

The tournament’s bracket will remain the same, as far as times, just won’t begin until Sunday. KC is seeded fourth in the East Division, and will face Blinn (42-13), the top seed from the South, at 7:30 p.m. Sunday, the final game of the first round. The tournament will be played at Angelina’s Larry Phillips Family Sports Complex.

The tournament is double-elimination, which of course means a team must lose twice to be out. With a win over Blinn on Sunday night, the Rangers would play Monday night at 7:30 against either Angelina or Galveston College. A loss on Sunday to Blinn and the Rangers will play at 2:30 p.m. Monday against the Angelina-Galveston loser.

KC, coached by Leslie Messina, is 22-24 on the season headed into the tournament. KC split its final regular season series (at Trinity Valley last week).

Likely to get the start on the mound for KC will be Mattie McQuary or Amanda White. McQuary on the season has almost double the wins that she has losses (she’s 13-7) and has 130 strikeouts in 138 innings with a 3.24 earned-run average. White has 88 strikeouts in 113 innings and a 4.82 ERA, and a 7-9 record. A third pitcher, Michaela Latham, is 2-2 this season with 27 strikeouts in 35 innings.

Kilgore has some gunners at the plate.

Nicole King has a .328 batting average and leads the team in doubles (14), with 23 RBI. Kelsey Ahart’s six homers leads the Rangers; she has a .299 average and 21 RBI. Ella Ortiz is right behind with five home runs, and has 18 RBI and a .290 average, and Makenna Bell has four homers, 19 RBI, and bats .261. Brooke Goynes, a former Longview standout, is hitting .323 and has 11 RBI.

The event starts at 12:30 p.m. Sunday with a matchup between Bossier Parish and San Jacinto. Angelina and Galveston play at 2:30. Tyler Junior College meets Coastal Bend at 5 p.m., and then KC-Blinn finish up the first round.

On the second day, now Monday, games will begin at noon.
