Overton volleyball

Overton junior Mary Fenter (13) reaches way, way up to snatch the ball and send it over the net in a recent matchup. Fenter and several teammates were honored as part of the recently-released District 19-2A all-district team. Fenter was named first-team all-district.

Overton High School volleyball didn’t capture a district championship this year, but the Lady Mustangs did fight their way into the playoffs, and several were honored as a part of the District 19-2A all-district team, released this week, as were several Leverett’s Chapel players.

One Overton player – senior Jewely English – earned a superlative honor, the district’s most valuable defensive player.

Another Kilgore-area school, Leverett’s Chapel, also plays in that district and Michelle Jamaica, a senior for the Lady Lions, was named the district’s co- most valuable server, along with Union Grove’s Avery Brooks. LC freshman standout Jasmin Chavez was named newcomer of the year.

Overton’s Mary Fenter, a junior, was the only Lady Mustang who was named all-district first-team. Coach Rickey Hammontree will be counting on Fenter, among others, to help the program take that next step next fall.

Also for Overton, junior Kaley McMillian was named second-team.

Honorable mentions for the Lady Mustangs were senior Sarrah Garrett, senior Makayla Moser and senior Ta’leyah Tilley. Four Overton players – Alex Brown, Fenter, Garrett and Moser – were named academic all-district.

Other superlative award-winners: Hawkins’ Christy McQueen was named coach of the year, and Makena Warren, a junior for HHS, was named most valuable blocker. Most valuable hitter was Carleigh Judd, of Union Gorve, and most valuable setter went to Big Sandy junior Calle Minter.

The most valuable player award, the big one, was split between Hawkins’ Logan Jaco and Big Sandy’s Chyler Ponder, both seniors.

Joining Fenter on the all-district first team was Leverett’s Chapel’s Ashilia Smith, Big Sandy’s Gracie Jenison, Hawkins’ Jordyn Warren and Lynli Dacus, and Union Grove’s Makena Littlejohn.

Joining McMillian on the second team: :C’s Jackeline Avalos, Hawkins’ Tenley Conde, Union Grove’s Sydney Chamberlain, and Carlie’s Naomi Brandenburg and Olivia Fraser.

Honorable mentions from LC: Isaira Avalos, Makinsey Blanton, Chavez, Jalynn Peery, Jayden Pierson, Bailea Reeves, and Gracie Warren. Academic all-district from LC: Isaira Avalos, Jackeline Avalos, Jasmin Chavez, Michelle Jamaica, Jalynn Perry and Bailea Reeves.
