WR’s Morton, local players get TSWA honors

West Rusk High School softball standout Makana Morton has been named to the Texas Sports Writers Association’s first-team all-state team, by member sports writers from across the state.

Morton, who recently signed a letter of intent to continue her education and softball career at Southern Arkansas University, was named to the Class 3A first team as a utility player.

Also, a pair of Kilgore High School players – Mackenzie Cavanaugh and Kristen Wilson – were named to the Class 4A second and third-team. Cavanaugh was named TSWA 4A second-team all-state as an outfielder, and Wilson to the third-team as a pitcher.

KHS catcher Bailey Downing and first baseman Hailee Jo Lewis were named to 4A’s honorable mention list. In 3A honorable mentions, Allyson Floyd of West Rusk was named at first base, West Rusk’s Brook Floyd at third base, and Sabine’s Sarah Davis at shortstop and Calleigh King as utility player.

In 2A honorable mentions, Overton pitcher Jaylin Blakeney made the list.


KC boys camp July 8-11

Coach Brian Hoberecht’s Kilgore College boys basketball camp will be at Masters Gym beginning next Monday, July 8, through Thursday, July 11.

The camp is for boys ages five through 17, and registration is $100 per camper through tomorrow. It’s $120 per camper after that date. That includes instruction, a camp basketball, a camp T-shirt, awards and lunch each day.

Registration will be at 8:30 a.m. the first day. There will also be concessions open during break time, with items at a low price.

Parents and guardians are invited to the end-of-camp game, which will be on the last day (Thursday, July 11) at 3:30 at Masters. An awards presentation will follow the game.

KC girls camp Aug. 5-9

The annual Lady Rangers basketball camp for girls entering first through 12th grades this fall is set for Monday, Aug. 5 through Friday, Aug. 9, at Masters Gym. The camp will be conducted by Lady Rangers head coach Addie Lees.

Girls entering first through sixth grades will be in the morning session – that’s from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m. each day. Girls going in to seventh through 12th grades will be in the afternoon session (1 until 3). Registration is $40 per camper, and that includes T-shirt and daily awards.

Campers should bring proper workout clothes (gym shorts, shirt, socks and basketball shoes).


Next KHS camp July 22

The next opportunity for a tennis camp at Kilgore High School is a “get-ready” camp for sixth through 12thgraders that begins July 22 – it’s July 22-25.

The cost is $50 per camper, and the camp is a prime-time camp, from 7 p.m. until 9 p.m.
