Locals honored as part of all-state team
West Rusk’s Piper Morton was named to the second team as a part of the Texas Sports Writers Association’s 2021 All-State softball team.
Morton, who helped West Rusk to a deep postseason run in the University Interscholastic League’s Class 3A playoffs, was named second-team all-state as a utility player. For the season, she batted .529 and had nine home runs, 11 doubles, three triples, 56 stolen bases (tagged out only once), scored 43 runs and had 36 RBI.
Kilgore’s Bailey Hedges and Jaycie Villanueva made the 4A all-state honorable mention list, Hedges at third base and Villanueva as an outfielder. Kilgore beat Lindale in a tiebreaker after the regular season to earn a playoff spot.
In 3A, pitcher Lilly Waddell of West Rusk earned honorable mention honors, as did Natalie Christy, an outfielder for the Lady Raiders.
