With seemingly all of Texas blanketed with snow and a second round perhaps coming Thursday, very few places will be able to play, or even practice, high school sports in the coming days.
Here’s a roundup of spring sports at Kilgore High School, and when they expect to get back to normal after temperatures begin to climb and the melt begins this weekend.
Soccer: Both KHS soccer teams obviously did not get to play on Tuesday night, and won’t be playing Friday night, either.
The Lady Bulldogs will hope things melt quickly Friday and then they’ll play at Center on Saturday morning at 11.
Kilgore boys coach Tom Wait said his team will host Center on Monday, here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium, with junior varsity beginning at 5. On Tuesday, the Bulldogs will play at Henderson, as had been originally scheduled, starting with JV at 5; the Lady ‘Dogs will host Henderson, also starting at 5 with JV.
On Thursday, both Kilgore boys and girls will play at Sabine, beginning at 5 p.m. with the varsity girls game, and on Friday, both KHS teams will host Waskom in that same format.
“Busy week,” Wait said.
Baseball, softball: Both the diamond sports teams have been playing scrimmages in anticipation of the starts of their seasons.
Coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick’s Lady Bulldogs were to host Nacogdoches Tuesday in the season opener for both teams. That didn’t happen, obviously, due to the snow and ice, and the tournament the Lady ‘Dogs had been scheduled to play in this weekend in Union Grove was also canceled in normal format: UG has talked about the possibility, Kirkpatrick said, of playing a one-day round-robin tournament on Saturday.
So, unless UG re-works its tournament and Kilgore elects to play, the next game on the schedule for Kilgore softball is next Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Longview, a 4:30 p.m. JV start. After that, KHS is scheduled to play in a tournament at Nac that will begin next Thursday, Feb. 25 and run through Saturday.
As for KHS baseball, the Diamond ‘Dogs still had a handful of preseason scrimmages left when the snow hit. A scrimmage that had been scheduled for earlier this week (varsity at home against Longview and the JV teams on the road at the Lobos) was canceled, and in all likelihood, Friday’s scrimmage at Driller Park against Pine Tree isn’t happening.
“Just hope it dries out by Monday or Tuesday,” KHS assistant baseball coach Joey Pippen said.
The ‘Dogs are scheduled to host another school in the News Herald’s coverage area, Sabine, next Tuesday at Driller, starting with a JV Red game at 4:30, with varsity to follow.
After that, Kilgore will once again play in the Whitehouse tournament. It’s next Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Then, it’s the annual Oil Belt Classic tournament here at Driller, March 4-6.
Both of Kilgore’s diamond teams had to cancel their alumni games that were supposed to be played last Saturday. Softball has re-scheduled its alumni game for March 2.
