Well, let’s get down to the nitty-gritty.

That’s what just about every high school volleyball team in the state is doing right now, with the playoffs a little less than two weeks away.

The Kilgore High School volleyball team has three regular season games left. They’re in fourth place in the District 16-4A standings – the top four teams make the UIL’s Class 4A playoffs. So they’re not in the worst spot, even after losing in three Tuesday night at home to Bullard.

There’s certainly no shame in losing to Bullard – the district has two very strong programs in Bullard and Lindale, and two that are pretty salty in their own right in Spring Hill and Kilgore.

But now, coach Madeline Harris’s Lady Bulldogs have to guard against being caught for that last playoff spot. Chapel Hill and Henderson are nipping at Kilgore’s heels, and KHS faces both in two of the next three games.

Kilgore (4-5 in district play) was to play at Chapel Hill on Friday, and while it is true that Kilgore swept Chapel Hill in their first-round meeting, it was three very close sets. Kilgore really needs to beat both Chapel Hill and Henderson to assure themselves of getting into the postseason.

The first step was at Chapel Hill Friday – see how they fared now in the Saturday morning volleyball roundup on kilgorenewsherald.com.

After that, Kilgore hosts Lindale on Tuesday, starting in regular format at 4:30 with freshmen, and then finishes the regular season at home next Friday against Henderson.

Kilgore lost to Bullard at home Tuesday in three, as mentioned, 15-25, 18-25, 18-25.

For KHS in the loss, Miah Thomas had nine kills, five blocks, two block assists, and two aces. Alexis T. Anderson had four kills, a block, two block assists and an ace. Skye Cotton had two kills and a block; Sha’Destiny Chism had three kills; A’viana McIntyre had a kill; and Keke Roy had an ace.

The Lady Bulldogs swept Cumberland Academy here in Kilgore last Friday, 25-13, 25-12, 25-18.

For Kilgore in the win, Thomas had 11 kills and three blocks; Anderson had four kills and two blocks; Cotton had three kills; Ashton Vallery, McIntyre and Chism each had two kills, and Vallery added an ace. Roy had four aces for Kilgore in the sweep.

Sabine: Coach Tara Wait’s Lady Cardinals had the night off Tuesday night, but are 20-1 overall and haven’t lost a district game. They have three remaining, beginning with a date with Daingerfield, and which was to be played Friday at Daingerfield.

Sabine is still ranked fourth in the state in 3A, in the Texas Girls Coaches Association’s state volleyball poll. The Lady Cardinals finish the regular season with a pair of road games next week: at New Diana on Tuesday, and at Hughes Springs next Friday, Oct. 23.

The first round of the UIL playoffs is slated for Nov. 2-3.

Overton: The Lady Mustangs are also trying to nail down a playoff spot in UIL Class 2A, but dropped a decision on Tuesday at Big Sandy, 23-25, 23-25, 25-27. Overton drops to 4-6 in district play with the loss.

Overton was to play at Union Hill on Friday.

For the Lady Mustangs, Mary Fenter had eight kills, four digs, two blocks and two aces. Also, Kaley McMillian had six kills, two blocks, 13 digs, seven assists and an ace; Ta’leyah Tilley had 16 digs, 11 assists and two aces; Jewely English had two kills, 21 digs, and five aces; and Sarrah Garrett had three kills and 14 digs.

Last Friday in a 25-17, 25-23, 25-11 home win over Carlisle, Overton got 10 kills, 11 digs, six assists, 10 aces and 21 points from McMillian with 10 kills, 11 digs, 6 assists, 10 aces and 21 points.

Also, Fenter with nine kills, five digs, an assist and an ace; Kayla Nobles had five kills and a dig; Tilley had a kill, four digs, 10 assists and three aces; and English had 20 digs, two aces and nine points.

Overton hosts King’s Academy Tuesday at 4:30 p.m., starting with the junior varsity, and then finish the regular season at Union Grove next Friday.
