It’s not quite been 52-card pickup – that might have been more fun – but the wintery weather has forced changes with Kilgore High School’s athletic schedules, and in the last 24 hours, it’s forced changes to the changes.

Snow and ice canceled everything in the last week, meaning regular season soccer games, and preseason softball and baseball scrimmages. It actually also canceled Kilgore baseball’s alumni game, and moved softball’s alumni game to March 2.

There have been a few more alterations since the schedule adjustments that had been laid out in Wednesday’s News Herald.

For now, at least, both KHS softball and baseball plans remain the same: coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick’s Lady Bulldogs will play what turns out to be the season opener at Longview on Tuesday, starting with the junior varsity at 4:30. Then Thursday, the Lady Bulldogs will start play in a tournament at Nacogdoches.

Kilgore baseball was unable to finish its scrimmage schedule, and will open the regular season as planned (unless there’s another change) on Monday at home at Driller Park against Sabine, starting with a JV red game at 4, and then varsity around 6:30. The Diamond ‘Dogs still hope to leave that game on Monday, because they play in a tournament at Whitehouse that’s scheduled to begin Thursday.

Soccer has a lot more volume than the diamond sports: the KHS boys and girls soccer programs are well into their season and well into the District 15-4A schedule. Neither Kilgore team has lost a district game.

The Lady Bulldogs had been scheduled to play Saturday at Center, but that game has been moved to Monday at Center, varsity only, at 5 p.m. The boys game between Kilgore and Center will be here at R.E. St. John, starting with JV at 5.

On Tuesday, the Lady ‘Dogs will host Henderson at R.E. St. John, starting with JV at 5, varsity to follow. Coach Tom Wait’s Bulldogs play at Henderson, also starting with JV at 5.

On Thursday, both KHS girls and boys will play at Sabine – Sabine is a 3A school in most sports, but in soccer, UIL has 3A teams play up with 4A, so Sabine and Kilgore are in the same district in soccer. Those games will be Thursday at James Bamberg Stadium on the SHS campus in Liberty City, and the night begins at 5 with the varsity girls.

Finally, on Friday, both Kilgore teams face Tatum: the Lady Bulldogs will host the Lady Eagles at 5 p.m., starting with JV, and the Bulldogs will play at Tatum, in the same format.

Kilgore tennis really didn’t miss an activity during the ice and snow: the KHS tennis team only recently began its spring season, and had been scheduled for off time, anyway.

Coach Jason Maroney’s Bulldogs JV tennis team plays in a tournament hosted by Longview, and varsity will play in the Spring Hill tournament on Friday, Feb. 26.
