Kilgore College softball rallied late for its first win of the young season on a damp Monday, here at The Ballpark at KC Commons.
The Rangers trailed late, but still rallied and defeated visiting Grayson, 10-9, in game one of what was to be a doubleheader, but the weather had other ideas. Game two was canceled, as were Tuesday’s games.
Tentatively, the Rangers (1-2 on the season) are scheduled to play doubleheaders Friday at Grayson and Saturday at Texas College in Tyler, beginning at 1 p.m. both days.
Coach Leslie Messina’s Rangers were to go to Jarvis Christian in Hawkins next Tuesday, but that’s been changed to home games. They’re still slated to head to Hill College in Hillsboro next Wednesday and to North Central Community College in Gainesville (Monday, Feb. 17) their next three outings, all scheduled to be 1 p.m./3 p.m. doubleheaders.
KC’s next scheduled home game is Feb. 22 against Lamar State.
On Monday against Grayson, the Rangers allowed Grayson to tie it up at 8-all in the sixth inning, and then the go-ahead run (9-8) in the top of the eighth.
KC needed some heroics, and got it.
Calleigh King had a single to reach in the Rangers’ bottom of the eighth, and then would score on a single by Madalyn Spears to tie the game at nine. Mackenzie Pierpoint, who had three hits earlier in the game, scored on an error for the game-winner.
For KC, in addition to Pierpoint, Hannah Grumbles had four hits (a double and three singles) and an RBI. Dani Moreno had two hits. King did, as well, and an RBI. Marissa Medina had a single and 2 RBI, and Lauren Corley and Spears each had a single.
KC began the season with a pair of losses, unfortunately, at home on Sunday afternoon against Weatherford, 8-5 and 7-5.
The Rangers’ home games are played at The Ballpark at KC Commons, a field located at the site of the former Kilgore Heights building on Houston Street, not far from campus.
