Kilgore, needing to string some wins together in order to make the University Interscholastic League volleyball playoffs, didn’t get one Tuesday night, as Henderson escaped with the five-set victory.
The Lady Bulldogs are 2-4 in District 16-4A, after completing the first round of play. They have an open date on Friday, and then start round two Tuesday at home against Spring Hill.
In order to get into the playoffs, which is something Kilgore has done very well in the last decade, they’ll need to be in the top four in a district that includes Bullard and Lindale, the top two teams in the standings right now. Kilgore’s wins in the district were against Cumberland and Chapel Hill.
KHS dropped the marathon five-set match to Henderson, 25-23, 23-25, 17-25, 25-18, 10-15.
Bryonne Brooks had 11 kills, two blocks, and seven digs. Maleah Thurmond and Summer Hayden-Epps each had 10 kills – Hayden-Epps had five digs and an ace, and Thurmond had three blocks and two digs.
Also for Kilgore, Ashton Vallery had three kills, 25 assists, 15 digs, and an ace; Isabell Witt had three kills, nine digs and two aces; Catherine Dennis had four kills, a block, and 17 digs; Jazmine Vasquez had 26 digs and four aces; Nawny Sifford had 16 digs; Fyndi Henry had three, and an ace; Alana Mumphrey had 10 assists, eight digs and two aces; and Brooke Couch had a kill, a dig, and an ace.
Overton: While Kilgore and Henderson were battling, Overton had a battle of its own, also going to five sets, an 18-25, 26-24, 25-20, 23-25, 15-12 hard-fought win.
It was huge for the Lady Mustangs, who moved to 4-1 in District 19-2A, and 20-10 overall. They’ll host Leverett’s Chapel on Friday, and that also wraps up their first-round district schedule.
For Overton in the matchup, Mary Fenter had 15 kills, 25 digs, a block and two aces; Chloe Laws had 11 kills, 21 digs, two blocks, an assist and four aces; Kaley McMillian had four kills, 20 digs, a block, 30 assists and six aces; Kayla Nobles had nine kills and two blocks; and Avery Smith had 30 digs and four aces.
Leverett’s Chapel: Speaking of LC, the Lady Lions got a big win of their own in the district on Tuesday, sweeping Union Hill, 25-22, 25-9, 25-21. It was LC’s second win in a row, after beating Big Sandy in five on Friday night.
The Lady Lions are 2-3 in district, headed into that showdown with Overton on Friday.
Jalynn Peery and Jayden Pierson each had six service points in that second set, and Peery added five more in the third. Jasmin Chavez finished with three kills, nine digs, nine aces, and 14 service points.
Jackeline Avalos went 100 percent from the line and had 12 digs. Ashilia Smith had five kills. Gracie Warren had two aces and two assists. Peery finished with five kills, a block and five aces. Pierson wound up with four kills and nine service points. Makinsey Blanton had four digs, and Baliea Reeves had nine aces, three assists and three digs.
