Leverett’s Chapel’s Jillian Shaw had to overcome an injury and got back into the lineup for the Lady Lions to help them get into the playoffs.
And now, Shaw has earned an individual honor for her play.
Shaw has been named to the Texas Sports Writers Association’s Class A all-state volleyball team for the 2019 season, an even-bigger honor considering the writers who actually cover literally thousands of games across the state each year are the one making the nominations and voting on these teams, along with coaches.
Shaw was the only player in the Kilgore News Herald’s coverage area to make the TSWA all-state first-team.
Sabine’s Samantha Bell was named to the TSWA Class 3A all-state second-team, and Shaw’s teammate, Michelle Jamaica, was named to the 1A third-team. Shaw is a middle blocker, Jamaica an outside hitter.
LC, coached by Rickey and Patty Hammontree, rebounded from an up-and-down season to make the University Interscholastic League’s Class 1A playoffs.
They beat Fruitvale, winning three out of four matches, in the first round before losing to Avery in round two.
The Lady Liions finished their season with a 20-17 record.
Bell is an outside hitter. And three of her teammates – Sierrah Richter, Aubree McCann and Mikinzi Cantrell – were all named to TSWA’s 3A all-state honorable mention list: Richter is a setter, Cantrell a hitter and McCann a blocker.
Coach Kristen Reaves led Sabine to its best-ever regular season, 39 wins, and a District 16-3A championship.
Sabine beat Waskom in the first round, but the Lady Cardinals ran into upset-minded Commerce in round two and couldn’t finish them off. Sabine finished the season with a 39-7 record.
Although no Kilgore player earned TSWA honors, it should be noted that the Lady Bulldogs, coached by Madeline Harris, had their best season since 1992, finishing 22-15 and beating North Lamar in the first round of the 4A playoffs before losing to Farmersville.
