Backs against the wall after losing the District 16-4A opener at Henderson earlier in the week, Kilgore had a choice: succumb to the pressure and lose to Gilmer at home on Saturday, or fight back. They chose the latter.

Kilgore’s volleyball team scored its biggest win of the season to date on Saturday afternoon at home, beating Gilmer in five sets, 18-25, 25-15, 19-25, 25-22, 15-8.

The Lady Bulldogs (10-12 overall, 1-1 in district play) were to resume their district schedule Tuesday night at Spring Hill, following the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald. Kilgore will host Cumberland Academy Friday at 4:30 p.m., starting with the varsity game.

The game against Gilmer went back and forth – in fact, going back before district play began, three of Kilgore’s last four matchups went to a deciding fifth set.

Jada Abercrombie had 16 kills, Miah Thomas, 14. Lauren Couch had eight; Skye Cotton had five; Alexis Anderson, three; Dayton McElyea had two; and Ashton Vallery had one.

Vallery led with 28 assists; McElyea had 14, and 17 digs. Thomas and Abercrombie each had 21 digs; Vallery and Couch each had seven, and Skyler Day had five. Abercombie had four blocks.

Sabine: Sabine’s Lady Cardinals picked up their 27th win of the season, and remained unbeaten in district play, with a 25-8, 25-6, 25-6 sweep of Arp on Friday. Sabine (27-5) was to host West Rusk on Tuesday night, and will play at Harmony on Friday at 4:30, starting with varsity.

Aubree McCann had 10 kills for Sabine, Mikinzi Cantrell, nine. McCann had six digs, Sierrah Richter, five, and 28 assists.

Leverett’s Chapel: The Lady Lions haven’t had a good start to district play, and added to that on Friday night with a 16-25, 25-27, 23-25 loss at home to Overton.

LC is 0-3 in district play and was to host Union Hill on Tuesday.

Against Overton, LC had 14 kills, three blocks, 13 digs and five aces from Jillian Shaw, returning from injury. Lexus Haley had seven kills, eight digs and 17 assists. And Michelle Jamaica had four kills, 12 digs, an assist and two aces.
