In the final regular season non-district softball game of the year, Kilgore gave Mabank a run for its money, but couldn’t quite seal the deal.
The Lady Bulldogs hosted Mabank Thursday, here at Stream-Flo Field, and came out on the wrong end of a 7-2 decision. The game was within striking distance for Kilgore until the final inning, with Mabank tacking on a couple of runs to put the game out of reach.
Kilgore played just that one game during this spring break week, and will begin its District 16-4A schedule next week. The Lady ‘Dogs will play their first two district games on the road, at Spring Hill on Tuesday (starting with junior varsity at 5 p.m.), and then at Bullard on Friday, again starting at 5 with JV.
After a scoreless first inning for both teams – although Kilgore’s Genna Cavanaugh did have a single – Mabank scored a pair of runs in the top of the second. A lead-off single and then an error that allowed a runner to go to second proved to be the first run of the game, because two batters later, Payten Nolan singled in the run for an RBI. Pitcher Avery Tomlinson grounded out, but got an RBI to make it 2-0.
More of the same for Kilgore in the bottom of the second. Jaycie Villanueva singled to lead off, but then Tomlinson struck out the side to end the inning.
Mabank plated three more runs in the top of the third. Kallie Beasley managed an infield hit, and with two on and no out, Olivia Sullivan got another single. Beasley was thrown out at home trying to score, but then Hannah Hanes burned the Lady ‘Dogs for a 2-RBI double. The next batter reached on an error that also scored a run.
Miah Thomas caught a fly ball for Kilgore for the second out of the inning and then pitcher Kristen Wilson got Ashlyn Liles to ground out to end the inning.
Kilgore got onto the scoreboard in the bottom of the third. With one out, Alyssa Whitington, who has been on a tear for the last three weeks, got a double. Three batters later, with two outs, Wilson got an RBI single, scoring Whitington. Wilson went to second on the attempt to throw out Whitington, but Tomlinson got Kilgore’s Jaycie Villanueva to ground out to end the threat.
The score remained 5-1 until the bottom of the fifth. Cavanaugh drew a two-out walk, and then scored on an RBI double by Hedges. But Mabank got out of the inning with a groundout, leaving it 5-2.
A double by Villanueva to lead off Kilgore’s half of the sixth didn’t do Kilgore any good: Mabank struck out the next two batters, and then tagged out Villanueva.
The Lady Panthers added two more runs in the top of the seventh to seal the win.
