Playing time for baseball and softball has been a premium lately, due to all the rain – ask Kilgore College softball about all their reschedules this season – but Kilgore High School has played three, and is playing this weekend in the Elysian Fields tournament.
Coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick’s Lady Bulldogs were to play twice on Friday in the tournament, after the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald, and are playing today: this morning at 9 a.m. against Marshall, then again against Atlanta right after, at 10:45.
Kilgore ISD is on spring break next week, but the softball team does have one home game: it’s Thursday, a special 1 p.m. junior varsity start, against Mabank, with varsity right afterward. KHS is honoring first responders that day.
The Lady ‘Dogs play their home games at Stream-Flo Field, adjacent to Driller Park, just off Commerce Street.
Mount Pleasant 10, Kilgore 2 (Monday): Kilgore moved this game a day earlier and played it Monday at Mount Pleasant, hoping to get it in before Tuesday’s storm arrived.
Kilgore lost, though, 10-2, in a game where the Lady ‘Dogs made seven errors.
Bailey Hedges had a single. Kristen Wilson had a hit and reached another time on a fielder’s choice. Miah Thomas had a single. Alyssa Whitington had a triple with an RBI. Diamond Smith had a single, with an RBI, and Cailey Brown had a single.
When Wilson reached in the sixth inning, Kaitlyn Porter scored, on Whitington’s triple. Smith followed with a single that scored Whitington.
MP had back-to-back doubles in the second to take a 1-0 lead. Kilgore had two outs, but committed four errors in the inning, and by its end, MP led, 4-0.
Wilson only gave up one earned run. She threw the entire game, and had four strikeouts.
Harleton 4, Kilgore 2: More errors led to two runs against Harleton, in the Elysian Fields tournament.
Thomas had a triple in the second, and scored on a grounder hit by Whitington to get KHS within one (2-1). Kilgore held defensively in the second inning, but in the third, Harleton got two more runs.
Jada Dennis reached on a bunt in the third, but was thrown out stealing; Jaycie Villanueva also had a triple in that inning, but was left stranded.
In the fourth, Hedges walked, and with two outs, Whitington had an RBI double.
Wilson had three strikeouts.
Elysian Fields 4, Kilgore 3: Against Elysian Fields in a game late Thursday, Genna Cavanaugh had a single; Villanueva had a single. Cavanaugh scored on a sac fly by Hedges, and then Villanueva scored on an error.
Wilson singled, Thomas walked, but a base-running mistake in the inning was the second out.
Kilgore led, 2-0, but EF’s lead-off batter placed a ball just right for one double, then the second hitter followed with a single. They answered with two runs to tie it at 2-all.
Dennis singled in the second, and Villanueva walked, but Kilgore couldn’t bring them in.
In EF’s half of the second, though, errors bit Kilgore again – four of them. EF got a 4-2 lead off of it.
Neither team scored in the third inning, but in the fourth, Whitington walked, and stole second. Cailey Brown had an RBI single that made it 4-3.
Dennis advanced Brown to second, and then went to third on a passed ball. But time was ruled to have expired, with EF in front, 4-3.
Villanueva singled, walked and scored a run; Cavanaugh singled and scored; Hedges had an RBI sac fly; Wilson had a single; Thomas walked and had a stolen base; Whitington walked, had a stolen base and scored; Brown had the RBI single late in the game; and Dennis had a single and a sac bunt.
Wilson again threw the entire game, and had five strikeouts.
