Kilgore High School’s basketball teams are both vying for playoff spots in the ultra-tight District 16-4A races, trying to be one of the top four teams in the district so that they make the UIL’s Class 4A postseason.
Coach Trushundra McGill’s Lady Bulldogs are running out of time fast, though. The Lady Bulldogs did get a win at Cumberland Academy in Tyler on Tuesday, 56-40.
They were to host Chapel Hill on Friday, after the print deadline for the News Herald’s Saturday edition, and then they’ll finish the regular season Tuesday night on the road at Bullard. All the KHS-Bullard games are at Bullard on Tuesday night, starting with subvarsity at 5 p.m., but the boys’ season continues on for a few more games.
If the Lady Bulldogs beat Chapel Hill, they’re probably in, McGill said, but both would assure them of a spot.
Kilgore is playing for fourth right now, McGill said. She led the Lady Bulldogs to a 17-10 record a year ago, and a playoff win over Liberty-Eylau. They lost in the second round to Canton, at Whitehouse.
In the win over Cumberland, Kilgore got 23 points, eight rebounds and three steals from Miah Thomas, and 14 points, 12 rebounds and three steals from Jada Abercrombie. Summer Hayden had seven points, four steals and three rebounds.
Kilgore’s boys were upset by Cumberland on Tuesday night, and are 6-3 in district play. They also were to host Chapel Hill Friday night, after the News Herald’s print deadline, and are at Bullard, as mentioned, on Tuesday. They have a bye next Friday (Feb. 14, Valentine’s Day) and then finish the regular season, fittingly enough, with a trip to Henderson on Tuesday, Feb. 18.
Sabine: Coach Sara Cantrell’s Lady Cardinals aren’t really playing to get into the playoffs, as much as they are for seeding.
The Lady Cardinals took down Gladewater, 52-38, on Tuesday night, and are now 10-2 in District 16-3A, and 19-9 overall. They were to play at Winona on Friday and finish the regular season against White Oak on Tuesday night, starting with JV games at 5. Sabine’s boys are also home Tuesday, but their regular season continues, as with Kilgore.
For Sabine against Gladewater, Blaire Kaufman had 21 points. Mercedes Willett had 12, and Mallory Furrh had 10. Aubree McCann added four, Hailey Davis, three, and Mikinzi Cantrell scored two.
Sabine’s boys also won their game with Gladewater, 51-46.
West Rusk: After winning three straight, the West Rusk Raiders couldn’t hold off Winona on Tuesday, falling 74-69.
Myles Foster led West Rusk with 19 points and had eight rebounds. Talon Winings had 15. Gavin Smith had 12 points, and Jimmie Harper had 10. Jaxon Farquhar had six, D.K. Anthony had three, and Jamal Ford and Logan Patterson each had two.
