It was a good night all the way around for Kilgore basketball on Friday night, as the regular season is rapidly approaching its end for the girls, and the boys are hitting their stride in their district schedule.
Both Kilgore teams won on Friday, sweeping Spring Hill in a big set of games here at KHS. Kilgore’s Lady Bulldogs topped Spring Hill, 33-21, and then the Bulldogs won, as well, 49-45.
Both were to play on the road Tuesday at Cumberland Academy in Tyler, after the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald, and both are scheduled for home games this Friday against Chapel Hill, starting with subvarsity games at 5 p.m.
Against Spring Hill on Friday, coach Trushundra McGill got 13 points, 17 rebounds and six steals from senior Jada Abercrombie in a low-scoring 33-21 win over the Lady Panthers.
Miah Thomas had eight points and nine rebounds for Kilgore (4-6 in District 16-4A play) and Alexis T. “A.T.” Anderson also had eight points and 14 rebounds.
As for coach Jeff Coleman’s Bulldogs, they keep scaring their own fans – but they seem to keep winning.
The Bulldogs beat Spring Hill, 49-45, in another good game in the nightcap of the evening on Friday. This time, it was Jake Thompson who lifted the Bulldogs, hitting a pair of free throws to ice the game for KHS with 12 seconds left.
Kilgore took a lead on a bucket by senior Jeremiah Hoskins about a minute and a half left, and then free throws by sophomore C.J. Ingram gave Kilgore a three-point lead with just under a minute left. Spring Hill’s Curtis Crowe got a bucket for the Panthers to bring them within one. Thomas Hattaway increased Kilgore’s lead a bit at the free throw line, but after a miss by Tyrese Jones of SHHS, Thompson got the rebound and was fouled, out-working the Panthers and knocking down the two free throws to cap the game.
Hoskins again led Kilgore with 19 points. Ingram had 13. Rowdy Rieke had six. Hattaway and Thompson each had four, and Kaden Thrower finished with three.
Sabine: Things got rough for Troup’s Lady Tigers Friday in Liberty City, to the tune of a 62-19 Sabine win.
Sabine allowed Troup just 11 first-half points, and rolled on the offensive end. Blaire Kaufman finished with 15 points for SHS. Mercedes Willet had 12 for Sabine, and Mikinzi Cantrell finished with nine.
Haley Davis scored eight. Aubree McCann had six, and the Furrh sisters – Mallory and Maddie – each had five. Ally Gresham chipped in two.
The Lady Cardinals only have three regular-season games remaining. They were to play at Gladewater on Tuesday night, will play at Winona Friday at 4 p.m. (starting with junior varsity), and then host White Oak next Tuesday, Feb. 11, in the regular season finale.
The Cardinals lost to Troup, 38-31, on Friday night. Savoy Goodwyn had eight points and also grabbed 12 rebounds for Sabine. A.J. Gresham had eight points and Kaden Manning, four.
Sabine’s Cardinals are also at Winona on Friday night.
West Rusk: The West Rusk Raiders continue to stay in the mix of things in District 16-3A, with a 73-45 drubbing of Harmony on Friday night.
Gavin Smith led WR with 19 points and Talon Winings had 18.
West Rusk’s girls lost, 55-27.
Both WR teams were to host Winona on Tuesday night and Arp on Friday (starting at 5 with JV). They’ll both play at Troup on Tuesday, starting at 5 with JV games.
