Kilgore High School coach Jeff Coleman (above) checks with the scoring table during a time-out. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs swept Cumberland Academy on Friday.

There were storms on the outside of Kilgore High School’s gymnasium Friday afternoon – and there were a couple of storms on the inside, too.

Both KHS teams beat visiting Cumberland Academy in a pair of District 16-4A games. Also, the Sabine Lady Cardinals remain unbeaten in District 16-3A, and can anybody in 16-3A stop West Rusk’s Talon Winings?

Kilgore: Senior Jeremiah Hoskins had a season-high 20 points in this important district win for coach Jeff Coleman’s Bulldogs.

Jake Thompson scored 13 for Kilgore; C.J. Ingram had 12. Rowdy Rieke scored four, Bryson Parker, three, and Thomas Hattaway had one for the Bulldogs. Kilgore’s boys were 2-1 in 16-4A before making the trip to Chapel Hill for Tuesday evening’s games, to be played after the print deadline for this edition of the News Herald.

The Lady Bulldogs, coached by Trushundra McGill, also beat Cumberland, 47-17, and have won back-to-back games headed into Chapel Hill.

Miah Thomas had 13 points, nine rebounds and three assists against CA. Alexis “A.T.” Anderson scored 12 points, had 14 rebounds and four blocked shots in the game. Na’kayla Hooper had 10 points and seven steals.

Both Kilgore teams will host Bullard on Friday night, beginning at 5 p.m. with subvarsity games (girls and boys freshmen and junior varsity).

Sabine: The Lady Cardinals are 5-0 in 16-3A after routing Gladewater, 62-34, on Friday night.

Mikinzi Cantrell had 23 points in the first half and finished with 25 in the win. Halyn McKenzie had 10, and Mercedes Willett and Blaire Kaufman, seven each. Maddie Furrh had six points; Mallory Furrh added five; and Hailey Davis had two.

The Lady Cardinals were to host Winona on Tuesday night, and will visit White Oak Friday.

West Rusk: The Raiders moved to 2-1 in District 16-3A with a 77-70 home win in overtime over Winona on Saturday.

And Winings was unstoppable.

Winings scored 34 points against Winona, his season and high school career best point total for a single game.

Gavin Smith scored 15 points for West Rusk and Myles Foster had 13, to go with 13 points. Jimmie Harper had 14 rebounds.

The Raiders and Lady Raiders were both to play at Arp on Tuesday night, after the News Herald’s print deadline for this issue. West Rusk hosts Troup on Friday, and that’s alumni night, where former West Rusk players are recognized. That begins with JV games at 5.
