Holidays are here, and with that, the high school basketball schedule has slowed to a crawl, although Kilgore High School’s Lady Bulldogs did play their District 16-4A opener last weekend.
Kilgore, looking to make advances this year after a second-round playoff trip a year ago under coach Trushundra McGill, already had eight wins in 13 games, but the Lady Bulldogs stubbed their toe at Henderson in the 16-4A starter Friday night.
Henderson’s defense held Kilgore scoreless in the first quarter of a 42-34 final. The Lady Lions outscored Kilgore 7-0 in the first period. Kilgore bounced right back, though, pulling within two, 15-13, at the half.
The difference: Henderson outscored KHS 16-8 in the final quarter.
Miah Thomas led the Lady Bulldogs (8-6 overall, 0-1 in district play) with 12 points, and also had four rebounds, four steals and three assists. Alexis T. “A.T” Anderson had 10 points, seven rebounds and three steals, and Skye Cotton chipped in five points.
Kilgore’s girls are off, of course, for Christmas today and compete in the annual Fidelity Christmas Classic tournament in Hallsville on Friday and Saturday, starting at 1:30 p.m. Friday against Marshall. The next time the Lady Bulldogs take the court for a district game, it’ll be at home on Friday, Jan. 3, against Gilmer.
Coach Jeff Coleman’s Bulldogs are still going through some growing pains, but it’s all been non-district so far, and if there’s growing pains, that’s when to have them.
The Bulldogs lost at home to Mount Pleasant on Friday, 52-26. Senior Jeremiah Hoskins had eight points, and Rowdy Rieke and Bryson Parker each had six. Thomas Hattaway had three, Jake Thompson two, and C.J. Ingram hit a free throw.
The ‘Dogs are also off today for Christmas, of course, but are back in action tomorrow, Friday and Saturday as a part of the annual Paris Holiday Tournament. The tournament schedule shows Kilgore playing at 3 p.m. Thursday against Hope (Ark.).
Kilgore will play its district opener at home against Gilmer next Friday.
Sabine-West Rusk: The Sabine Lady Cardinals are liking this Christmas break schedule thing.
Sabine’s girls blew by West Rusk, 62-35, on Friday night, winning their second District 16-3A game. They’ve won both.
Sabine was to play in a tournament in Tenaha (boys and girls divisions of that) this weekend, Thursday through Saturday, and
Mikinzi Cantrell and Blaire Kaufman each had 18 points against West Rusk. Mallory Furrh had 14, and Maddie Furrh had five. Mercedes Willett had four, Aubree McCann, two, and Halyn McKenzie had a point.
After the weekend in Tenaha, Sabine goes back to its regular schedule and hosts Elysian Fields Tuesday night, starting with junior varsity at 5:15.
West Rusk’s Lady Raiders are off until they visit White Oak next Friday, a 5 p.m. JV tip-off.
Coach Chad Hlavlaty’s Riaders beat Timpson, 60-55, on Friday, and got a huge night from Talon Winings: 26 points, seven rebounds, and two assists.
