West Rusk has got to stop the bleeding and do it fast if they are going to make the UIL Class 3A playoffs.
The Raiders, once shoo-ins for a playoff spot in District 8-3A, Division I, have lost three district games now, and have only one left: this Friday at home against Winnsboro, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Coach Nick Harrison’s Raiders are off next Friday, that odd last-week open date. If they can beat Winnsboro on Friday, they’ll likely be in the playoffs, and they’ll get an off-week next Friday before they start.
Otherwise, the 2019 season is over.
Tatum dealt WR a 29-24 loss last Friday; in the game, Gavin Smith passed for a 13-yard touchdown to Travis Graham, and ran for a 38-yard score. Alexis Magallanes also had a 20-yard field goal.
Winnsboro was off last week, but beat Tatum, 34-13, back on Oct. 18. The Red Raiders are 2-2 in district play. In fact, Sabine is 4-0, and Gladewater is 3-1; after that, it’s a log-jam of teams with two wins: Mineola, Winnsboro, Tatum and West Rusk. If WR can beat Winnsboro this weekend, they would own the tiebreaker over both Mineola and Winnsboro, by virtue of head-to-head wins. Sabine faces Gladewater on Friday for the district championship; two other teams from 8-3A will make the playoffs.
