After a tough night to open the 2019 season at neutral site Jasper against Evadale last week, coach Justin Arnold and his Overton High School Mustangs will pull themselves up by the bootstraps, so to speak, and make another trip this Friday.
It won’t be a neutral site, though. Overton (0-1) takes on Union Grove (1-0), Friday night at UG, a 7:30 p.m. kickoff.
Overton will attempt to bounce back from the 46-14 loss to Evadale, one that has a few Mustangs limping. But not out.
“Our kids play hard,” said Arnold, himself a former Mustangs player. “We got banged up a little bit. But we don’t give up.”
Against Evadale, Shaun Garcia had 98 yards rushing and a score, and Cole Marshall had 25 yards rushing, and the Mustangs’ other touchdown. Aaron Warwick ran for 25 yards.
Marshall was 2-of-6 for 35 yards passing. And on defense, Garcia, Marshall, and Cadine Pierce each had five tackles. Jaxson Clark had three, Justin Gomez and Warwick each had two, and Zander Slack had one.
Arnold said Union Grove, who beat Simms Bowie, 35-0, last week, will be a test.
“They’re going to be physical, out of a wing-T,” he said. “It might be a quick game. We both like to run the football. But they’re going to be tough to beat.”
