SUMMER IS OFFICIALLY OVER, THE SEASON STARTS TODAY -- Kilgore College head football coach Willie Gooden becomes the Rangers’ new leader this afternoon with the kickoff of the 2019 season. KC hosts Tyler Junior College in the season opener for both teams. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. here at R.E. St. John Memorial Stadium. Did you know: Kilgore College’s last loss was to Cisco back on Sept. 15, 2018. The Rangers won eight games to finish out the 2018 season.

Last meeting: KC eat TJC, 49-17 win at R.E. St. John.

Last game: KC beat Pima (Ariz.) in the Heart of Texas Bowl in Waco back on Dec. 1, 2018.

Ranked: Sixth in the preseason NJCAA top 20 poll).

Tyler Junior College

Head coach: Thomas Rocco (first season)

Record: 0-0 (again, first game)

Did you know: TJC finished with a losing record in 2018, a 4-5 record, and are looking to fill quite a few holes, including starting quarterback. Rocco replaced longtime TJC coach Danny Palmer, while Gooden replaced former KC coach J.J. Eckert. Ironically, both Eckert and Palmer were first-year coaches together, as well.

What else is new?: The Apaches have a new athletic director, as well. Longtime AD Tim Drain has retired, and

Last game: That 49-17 loss to KC. The Apaches missed the Southwest Junior College Football Conference playoffs a year ago.

What’s on the line: Just bragging rights. This game doesn’t count in the conference standings. That will be the rematch Oct. 26, at Rose Stadium.

Next week: KC hosts Navarro next Saturday, Aug. 31; Tyler will visit Blinn next Saturday.
