Kilgore High School baseball has been the dominant program – in the dominant East Texas district – for the last few years.
The Diamond ‘Dogs, led very efficiently by coach Eugene Lafitte, were within a win of the University Interscholastic League Class 4A state tournament a year ago, before losing to eventual champ Argyle, and then actually reached the state tourney last year for the first time since 1972, falling to Sweeny in the semifinal round.
Who knows what might have happened this year, and we’ll never know, thanks to the coronavirus pandemic that caused all schools (and consequently, spring sports) to come to a screeching halt in March and April.
But District 16-4A coaches are adamant about honoring seniors from one of, if not the, best baseball district in the state, so they’ve released an all-senior team.
Kilgore won the district championship for the last two years, and had seven seniors honored (listed here in alphabetical order): outfielder Karson Gee, pitcher Chase Hampton, pitcher Brayden Johnson, outfielder Jayce McFarland, infielder Spencer Thompson, outfielder Kaden Thrower and catcher Sam Witt.
Also honored were these seniors from other programs.
