I enjoyed Bill Woodall's column in the ETC magazine last week. His talk of singing from the hymnal reminded me of something I remember from early childhood. I was too young to read the hymnal, so I tried to sing along with the adults aping their words. I was sing “What a fight to dread, what a fight to fear, leaning on the everlasting arms.

On a more serious note, if every church in Kilgore has twice as many in attendance next Sunday as they had last Sunday, still less than half our people will be in church.

Kilgoreans, we can do better.

On behalf of the board members of The SAMstrong Foundation, Inc, I would like to personally thank everyone for their involvement in our 2nd annual I Play For Sam Memorial Soccer Tournament, held annually on the Saturday following Thanksgiving. All proceeds from this tournament are currently used to provide scholarships to eligible senior(s) attending Kilgore High School.

First we would like to sincerely thank Lupe and Kilgore Soccer Association for allowing us to use their facilities for our tournament the past two years. KSA was Sam's home away from home for most of her youth, so it only seems fitting to honor her there. The following people made generous donations to the foundation: Mike and Mandy Powell, Alec Lopez, Nikki Dobbs, and Laura Rickman. The following sponsored the tournament shirts: Petrolift Systems, Gratton Chiropractic and Wellness, Geaux Oilfield Services, KSA, 13TWELVE, and Energy Weldfab. Thanks to 13Twelve for these great shirts and service! To those who asked to remain unnamed, please know you are not excluded from our gratitude. It means so much to have so many come to spend their day playing the game Sam loved most, with music and laughter and yes, fierce competition. Your continued support allows us to honor Sam's memory by helping others, something Sam did without hesitation.

There are many ways to support The SAMstrong Foundation, Inc, to include your time and service at special events, monetary donations, annual pledges, and in-kind products and services. Donations are tax deductible.
