“And they who for their country die shall fill an honored grave, for glory lights the soldier’s tomb, and beauty weeps the brave.”

– Joseph Rodman Drake

WE’RE grateful to John Edney and Joe T. Parker for their ongoing efforts on behalf of veterans. In November, we celebrate those who serve; on Monday, Memorial Day, we honor those who gave all for their country.

YOU can join the remembrance at 9 a.m. May 27 at the Kilgore War Veterans Monument at Harris Street Park. John and Joe have arranged patriotic entertainment and a keynote address from Dr. Larry Gilbert, dean of instruction for the Corinth campus of North Central Texas College.

WE certainly hope to see you there.

THEN, Tuesday, Kilgore Historical Preservation Foundation will honor those who have contributed to protecting this community’s heritage. The foundation’s Derrick Award ceremony is set for 5 p.m. at KHPF’s Old Post Office History & Arts Center.

UNFORTUNATE news about Splash Day’s delay (see Page 2A), but we certainly understand: according to our ever-helpful sources at the National Weather Service office in Shreveport, this time from meteorologist Patrick Omundson, our area has recorded almost 28 inches of rain so far this year, about one-third more than the average.

BECAUSE you asked, we’re keen to keep readers in the know about upcoming Vacation Bible School events. Please send us the name of the host church and its address as well as the dates, times, theme and relevant contact information for the event. We’ll be publishing – as soon as possible – a rundown of upcoming activities, so email the details ASAHP to jdraper@kilgorenewsherald.com.

WE’RE already hearing great things about the new Loco Meaux brewpub on Main Street, open for business after a long labor of love by Ty King and his team.

WE will be closed, by the way, for Memorial Day, along with Kilgore City Hall and other public and private offices observing the national holiday. That said, we’ll definitely be out at the war veterans monument – we wouldn’t want to miss another rendition of “Taps” by the ever-faithful Angela Burch of KPD.

THE Kilgore High School Class of 1969 is trying to track down some classmates: Jimmy Harrell, William Brown, Sandra Greer, Sharon Bales, Terri Johnson, Brenda Jones, Pam Sackett and Ella Ross. If you have a lead, pass it on to Jan Wylie at 903-987-1097 or JanRWylie@aol.com.
