Polestar, the premium electric performance car brand from Sweden, has updated its Polestar 2 luxury sedan for the 2022 model year with increased range and what the company calls "best-in-premium-segment pricing." The company says the new Polestar 2 can travel up to 265 miles on a full battery charge and start at $45,900 before any federal tax credits.
The most significant change for 2022 is the debut of the Polestar 2 Single Motor, which has one motor that powers the front wheels. Buyers take heed: this is the model to get if you value the 265-mile range over the vehicle's 231 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque. According to the automaker, the Single Motor Polestar 2 will be available before the end of this year.
Both 2022 Polestar 2 electric vehicle (EV) models use the same 78-kWh lithium-ion battery pack, but when you opt for more power, the Polestar 2 Dual Motor delivers 408 hp and 487 pound-feet of torque. The trade-off, of course, is that the driving range drops to 249 miles. That's still 16 miles more than the 2021 Polestar 2. The 2022 Polestar 2 Dual Motor pricing starts at $49,900 before incentives, and deliveries will begin in October 2021.
Customers can order both versions of the 2022 Polestar 2 with optional equipment packages: the Plus Pack, the Pilot Pack, and the Performance Pack (only on the Dual Motor version).
The $4,000 Plus Pack introduces a mechanical heat pump to the EV as a way to help extend the range by up to 10 percent "under certain conditions," Polestar said. A full-length panoramic glass roof, a Harman Kardon audio system, WeaveTech vegan upholstery, and "high-level" interior illumination round out the Plus Pack, which Polestar says is the one to buy if you'll be driving in colder climates.
At $3,200, the Pilot Pack is the lowest-cost package, but the one that offers a suite of important safety and driver-assistance features, like adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and Pilot Assist.
Finally, the $5,000 Performance Pack gives the Polestar 2 adjustable Öhlins suspension dampers on the front axle and rear forged 20-inch alloy wheels. Brembo brakes, Continental sport tires, and several "Swedish gold" aesthetic details round out the package.
Other options for the Polestar 2 include ventilated Nappa leather interior ($4,000), 20-inch wheels ($1,200), a semi-electric tow bar ($1,200), and metallic paint ($1,200).
Those interested in buying can order a new Polestar 2 through the company's website, Polestar.com, as well as with assistance from Polestar Specialists at a growing number of Polestar Spaces. The company says it will have 25 of these showrooms open by the end of 2021.
