Minnette Elder
JAMESTOWN, NY Minnette Elder, 82, died Tuesday, July 02, 2019, in Jamestown, New York, after a long illness.
A native of Kilgore, Texas, Elder was born September 22, 1936. Her parents Frank and Gretta Elder preceded her in death.
Elder graduated from Kilgore High School in 1954, received a B.S. degree in physical education from Texas Christian University and earned a M.S. degree from North Texas State University.
In October of 1955, Elder represented Kilgore as a Duchess to the Rose Festival in Tyler, Texas.
Early teaching years were spent in Gainesville, Van Fleck and Corpus Christi. In 1968 she was recruited by Jamestown Independent School District as a junior high physical education teacher. She served in that capacity until retiring in 1991.
Elder and Patricia DuBois operated Misty- Ro Ranch for many years raising show llamas and caring for as many as 45 at any one time.
An avid golfer, Elder won numerous club memberships across East Texas including Kilgore, Gladewater and Longview. While living in Jamestown, she won club championships at Conewango County Club and Jackson Valley Country Club in Warren, PA. Elder was also a part of a foursome that won many tournaments held for charitable causes.
Elder took advantage of the lake effect snow while in Jamestown and was an enthusiastic cross county skier. She organized and sponsored a ski club at her school.
Elder will be remembered as a loyal friend, a person of quick wit and one full of generosity and helpfulness.
Surviving are a sister Meriam Eakin and her husband, Joe Eakin, of Tyler; Frank Elder, III and his wife, Lee Draper Elder, of Longview and her longtime friend Patricia DuBois of Jamestown. Nieces and nephews are Gretta Anne Eakin Sharp of Chandler, Carey Elder Kelley of Terlingua, Joseph Eakin of Tyler and Bo Elder of Austin.
Her immediate family will place her ashes next to her grandmother, Minnie Elder, in the Kilgore Cemetery on September 22. Friends and family are invited to to the Back Porch, 904 Broadway, Kilgore, at 5:00 p.m. to share their favorite memories. Memorials may be made to Chautauqua County Humane Society, 2825 Struck Road, Jamestown, NY 14701.
