The Rotary Club of Kilgore believes every child should have a new pair of shoes to wear for the first day of school – and so again this year, they’re doing something to make sure that’s the case.

Qualifying students have the opportunity to receive a new pair of shoes, socks, and a knit stocking cap for the colder months. Children from any family who receives benefits from SNAP, Medicaid, SSI, or the National School Lunch Program qualifies to receive shoes.

Shoes will be distributed from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 6 to Saturday, Aug. 8 in the Kilgore College Parks Fitness Center. Enter the Kilgore College building from Broadway Boulevard. There will be signs to show the entrance.

Each child needing shoes should be present for measuring to ensure correct size.

Parking will be in the lot directly in front of the Christ the King Catholic Church.

Only one adult/parent will be allowed to accompany children from the same family group. But no entry will be allowed without appropriate face covering.

Here’s the planned schedule: From 7 - 8 a.m. Thursday, shoes will be distributed to those with last names that begin with A; from 8-9 a.m. the letter B; and from 9-10 a.m., the letter C. From 10-11 a.m., shoes will be donated to those with last names that begin with any of the three of them (A, B, or C).

From 11 a.m. to noon Thursday, those with last names that begin with D can pick up shoes, and from noon to 1 p.m., those who’s names begin with E. From 1-2 p.m., it’s the letter F; and from 2 -3 p.m., letters D, E or F.

The pattern is the same for for the rest of the day: Those who’s last names begin with G should come from 3 -4 p.m., H from 4-5 p.m., I from 5-6 p.m., and letters G, H or I from 6-7 p.m.

On Friday, those who’s last names begin with J have the first hour (from 7 until 8), then K (8 through 9), and then L (9-10). From 10 until 11 a.m., those who’s names begin with any of those three may come. Then 11 until noon is letter M, noon until 1 is letter N, and 1-2 p.m. is letter O, with the 2-3 p.m. hour also opened for anyone who’s last name begins with any of those three letters.

Friday from 3-4 p.m. is for those with last names that begin with P, 4-5p.m. for the letter Q, 5-6 p.m. for the letter R, and 6-7 p.m. for each of the three of those.

Saturday’s distribution begins with S from 7-8 a.m., then the letter T from 8-9 a.m., and U from 9-10 a.m. At 10 a.m., any of those may arrive. From 11 a.m. to noon, it will be folks served with last names starting with V, from noon to 1 p.m. with W, and from 1-2 p.m. those with names beginning with X, Y or Z. From 2-3 p.m., it will be V through Z. From 3-4 p.m., letters A through D once again. From 4-5 p.m., letters E through J, from 5-6 p.m. letters K through R, and from 6-7 p.m, letters S through Z.

Last year, the Kilgore Rotary Club supplied 410 children with shoes.
