Rusk County Commissioner Bill Hale is urging county residents to take advantage of early voting in upcoming elections.
Early voting will be held only at the Rusk County Elections Office this year, owing to a change in state law.
“There was a vote taken in court earlier that was to only have early voting at the elections office in Henderson. We’ve been able to have early branch voting for a couple of days for the last several years but the state legislature passed a bill that says if you have early branch voting you have to have it every day,” Hale said.
On consulting with the Rusk County Elections Office, Hale learned it “would be impossible to have enough election staff” to keep the branch voting locations properly staffed during normal early voting periods.
“The court made a decision to only have early voting at the elections office in Henderson. We didn’t have any other choice,” he said.
Still, Hale encouraged Rusk County residents to take advantage of early voting whenever possible.
“If they’re going to early vote they’re going to have to make plans to do it. It’s the still best thing to do rather than fight those lines on Election Day. I would highly encourage people to vote early.”
