The city’s pool, located just off Highway 259 between the Kilgore Public Library and the community house, will remain closed for the rest of the summer season.
Just after the News Herald went to press with its Wednesday print edition, city officials elected to keep the pool closed. It had closed early last week after two lifeguards tested positive for the COVID-19, or coronavirus.
The city released a statement at 8:30 Tuesday night on Facebook making it official.
“After considerable consideration of many factors, including the limited time left in the season, low bather use, and current COVID activity, we have decided to suspend the operation of the Kilgore City Pool until next season. Please take care and we look forward to seeing you next year.”
The city’s splash pad for children – the Lazy Splash Ranch, on North Street – is unaffected by the closure, and is still open. It’s up near First Baptist Church-Kilgore, as a part of the city park.
One other note: the traffic closure on northbound 259, near the intersection of 259 and Lantrip Street, was originally supposed to be down to one lane through July 17. That work has been extended, and the lane will remained closed there, near Walgreens and the site of the new Dairy Queen, through this coming Friday, July 24.
