“It is better, I think, to grab at the stars than to sit flustered because you know you cannot reach them... At least he who reaches will get a good stretch, a good view, and perhaps even a low-hanging apple for his efforts.” —R.A. Salvatore

Congrats to Kilgore High School teacher and coach Cheyenne Kirkpatrick and the students she led to the SkillsUSA competition in Waco last week. For the third year in a row, Kirkpatrick and her students studied hard to go for the gold at the competition, which allows students to compete in a variety of contests based on career and technical education skills. This results in better preparation for life after high school for the students, as well as giving students a chance to compete against one another. KHS brought home a bevy of awards once again, check out the story in today’s issue for a list of everything KHS students won.

This week’s city council meeting was canceled but we’ll be at the next one on Feb. 25 to keep you in the loop on all major developments in the City of Kilgore. Remember, there is a public comments portion of each council meeting where citizens can address council members about questions, concerns, comments or even congratulations.

Are y’all ready to vote? The voter registration deadline has now passed but early voting is soon upon us.

Check out page 9A of this issue for a bit more info on the voting process and keep an eye on the pages of KNH in the near future for more info about local candidates running for office.

News of the dangerous coronavirus has been all over the place lately. While the situation does not appear to be dire here in Texas, it’s still a smart play to wash your hands regularly, cover you mouth and nose when sneezing and coughing and avoiding touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unclean hands.

Remember, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

“Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work.”

- Thomas A. Edison
