Pilgrim Lutheran Church and the Rotary Club of Kilgore, in connection with The Blood Center East Texas, are hosting their 31st Quarterly Kilgore Community Blood Drive on Saturday April 17 from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 713 Florey St. in Kilgore.

All those eligible, of any blood type, may donate; walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are recommended (to schedule an appointment, sign yourself up at https://www.commitforlife.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/315985 or contact the church office by email at info@pilgrimlc.org or by phone at 903-984-4333.

There is a constant need for blood around the state, and the coronavirus has diminished the number of drives and so the available supply.

The Blood Bank of East Texas requires that donors wear masks and is taking extra precautions to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. The Blood Bank of East Texas will also test donated blood for the coronavirus antibodies and make that test result available to the donor.

If the event collects 25 or more units of blood, organizers will give away a total of $300 in cash prizes, thanks to Citizens Bank of Kilgore, to three donors or donor-recruiters drawn at random (if they collect fewer than 25 units of blood, they will give away $25 to one donor or donor-recruiter drawn at random, thanks to another patron).

This drive continues the eighth year of quarterly blood drives cosponsored by the Kilgore Rotary Club and Pilgrim Lutheran Church. They have collected more than 475 units of blood products in the 30 preceding quarterly drives.

Who Can Donate?

Are you willing and able to donate? In general, eligible donors have an official photo ID, are at least 17 years old (those 16-years old can donate with the parental-consent form here; there is no upper age limit), are in good general health and feel well that day, and are not temporarily or permanently disqualified for other reasons.

Donors aged 16-18 must weigh at least 122 pounds, and donors aged 19 and up must weigh at least 110 pounds.

To check your eligibility before the drive, call (877) 482-5663 or (713) 790-1200 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or email anytime for a response within 24 hours.

On average, donating takes less than 1 hour for the whole process, with the actual donation taking only 6-10 minutes.

The Pilgrim congregation and the Rotary Club are hosting such a community drive once every three months, so Kilgore donors, by coming to each drive, can easily donate four times per year. Whole-blood donors generally are eligible to donate every two months (once every 56 days).
