Kilgore residents will have an opportunity to honor the spirit and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at an event hosted by Kilgore Men and Women of Alliance. KMWA’s MLK Day event will be held Monday, Jan. 16 beginning at 10 a.m. downtown at the Texan Theater.

Victor Boyd, city council member and KMWA leader, said the event will honor local citizens who strive to make their community a better place.

“This is our seventh annual MLK Day Event, and it will be just as awesome as those of the past,” Boyd said.

“Each year, we strive to recognize women and men who have shown through their work, community service or just their life how Dr. King’s vision has inspired or helped them to achieve and make a difference for others.”

Honorees for this year’s ceremony have shown a commitment to the principles of equality and unity, he said, and how those principles can break down boundaries and build great communities and people.

“Kilgore is blessed to have so many people who have paved the way for others to be the leaders of our community, now and for the future.”

This year’s honorees are:

• Geonix owners Terry George and the late Larry Nixon

• Kilgore College Athletic Director Courtney Pruitt

• Kilgore College Head Football Coach Willie Gooden

• Kilgore High School Class of 1973-74 First Black Basketball Team

• The late Dennis Williams

“It is always an honor for KMWA to be able to honor deserving people each year and we hope to continue for years to come,” Boyd said.
