A 56-year-old Kilgore man died on Interstate 20 early Friday morning, reportedly struck by a passing vehicle while he was pushing his own.

According to a Department of Public Safety release, James Michael Evans was traveling westbound on I-20 in a 2003 Ford Ranger when the vehicle experienced mechanical problems. He and a passenger exited the truck and began pushing it shortly before 2 a.m.

“At the same time, the driver of a 2020 Freightliner truck tractor towing a semi-trailer was also westbound and struck the disabled vehicle and one of its occupants,” Sgt. Jean Dark reported.

Troopers were dispatched at 1:56 a.m. to the scene a half-mile east of the City of Kilgore in Gregg County.

“The driver of the Freightliner was identified as William Rex Weimer, 42, of Burkesville KY.  A co-driver of the Freightliner was identified as Walter Helmuth Behringer, 58, of Burkesville, KY.  Neither were injured in the crash,” Dark noted. “Evans (was) pronounced at the scene by Judge Robbie Cox and taken to Rader Funeral Home in Kilgore.

“The crash remains under investigation.”
