Kilgore ISD has announced the return of its summer meal plan beginning in May, according to a release sent Monday by the district.
“Kilgore Independent School District will serve healthy, nutritious meals for children once again this summer,” the release said. “Bringing healthy summer meals to Kilgore children ensures kids have a healthy vacation and return to school ready to learn. This summer, Kilgore Independent School District will connect children 18 years old and younger with healthy meals at no cost to the child.”
The meals are offered as part of the “seamless summer” program by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, administered locally by Texas Department of Agriculture. They’re intended to provide nutrition over the summer to children who rely on school meals during the academic year. Meals are free and open to children regardless of whether or not they are a KISD student, but students must be present to receive a meal.
“Children need good nutrition year round so they can learn, grow and succeed in life,” said Jennie Hammerbacher, RDN LD, KISD School Nutrition Director. “With 1 in 5 Texas children struggling with hunger, the summer meal programs can help bridge the gap when children lose access to nutritious meals.”
Meals will be served at the following Kilgore ISD locations:
- Kilgore Primary School, 255 Baughman Road: May 24-28, June 1-July 1 (Monday through Thursday)
- Kilgore Intermediate School, 2201 Whipporwill Lane: June 7-June 17 (Monday through Thursday)
- Chandler Elementary, 2500 Chandler St.: June 7-June 17 (Monday through Thursday)
At all locations, breakfast will be served from 7:15 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. and lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
