Dark-of-night shenanigans could have ended much worse for a trio of young teens early Sunday morning.
The youths’ encounter with Kilgore Police began shortly after 4 a.m. in downtown Kilgore, escalated into a pursuit and eventually ended in a crash two miles away. The 14-year-old male behind the wheel of the 2015 Ford SUV fled the scene and was soon caught by an officer while others secured his passengers, a 14-year-old girl and a second boy, 13 years-old.
“The occupants were all detained,” KPD Lt. Jonathan Gage confirmed.
All three are juveniles and will not be identified.
“The officer initially attempted to stop for failure to dim headlights at East Main and West Rusk Street,” Gage reported. “The vehicle did not stop and continued driving… They drove from Main to Henderson Boulevard then down Houston to where they got on Higginbotham” turning north before leaving the roadway and crashing into a small embankment and a sign-pole on the corner of Littleton Road.
One of the two passengers suffered minor injuries in the collision, Gage added; both were released to parents. The driver faces charges including evading arrest or detention with a vehicle and accident involving personal injury.
“There's nothing in the report about how they ended up there. I don't know what they were doing out at four in the morning.”
