An Overton man suffered a stroke behind the wheel earlier this month, sparking a collision on FM 3053 the evening of June 8.
Family members confirmed physicians’ diagnosis earlier this week.
Catarino Gallardo “C.G.” Mata was westbound on CR-2729 at the time of the incident. In the midst of the medical crisis, the vehicle lost control at FM 3053 and was struck by a northbound pickup with four occupants.
Mata, 76, was transported to UT Health Science Center in Tyler and later died from his injuries. The second vehicle’s driver and passengers were transported to the Christus Good Shepherd Emergency Department in Kilgore, where they were treated and released.
Per a report from Texas Department of Public Safety, all five individuals were wearing seatbelts at the time of the crash.
Mata, a longtime pharmacist, was honored in a June 12 Rosary and visitation followed by a memorial service June 13. The former Kilgore College trustee was a previous KC Alumnus of the Year and an honoree in the KC Athletic Hall of Fame.
