Kilgore College will start a program June 17 for students interested in becoming a licensed barber.

Classes will be held at KC-Longview, meeting Mondays through Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m., and every other Saturday from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Graduates of the program will complete the 1,500 hours required to take the state licensure examination to earn certification as a Class A Barber.

Total cost for the program per current tuition and fee schedules is $3,643 in-district and $6,645 for out-of-district.  Textbooks, uniforms, barber tools and supplies will cost approximately $855.  The classes are credit classes and qualify for financial aid.

In addition, barber classes will be offered for individuals with a cosmetology operator license who wish to earn a barber license.  Three courses offered as continuing education will give students the 300 hours required for the crossover.  These classes do not qualify for financial aid.

Tuition for the crossover classes will be approximately $387 each for a total of $1,161.

Crossover cosmetology-to-barber students will also need to purchase textbooks and supplies.

Starting in late July, the barber program will open its doors to the public for reduced-price haircuts and shaves.

In addition, first-responders and veterans will be given appreciation cards for $3 haircuts/shaves.
