In this June 2019 file photo, Danville Cemetery Association President Morris Hollowell speaks to an audience gathered for fellowship and remembrance. This year’s picnic, originally set for later this month, has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will resume next year.

A picnic held annually at Danville Cemetery in Kilgore has been cancelled due to health and safety concerns related to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to Danville Cemetery Association President Morris Hollowell.

“Because of the COVID-19, some of the other cemetery picnics have already cancelled theirs. One of those was in July and ours is in June so we decided to cancel it just because of the COVID-19,” Hollowell said.

He added there are no plans to reschedule the 2020 picnic but said it will resume next year.

The picnic, a decades-old tradition, is held at the historic cemetery on Co. Rd. 2452. It’s an opportunity for family members of those buried at the cemetery to enjoy fellowship, live music and to discuss business matters of the site. The tradition began in 1926.
