“Football is an honest game. It’s true to life. It’s a game about sharing. Football is a team game. So is life.”
— Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath
Agreed, Broadway Joe. And let’s hope we all get to live a lot of “life” pretty soon.
THIS IS A very “newsy” paper, and I want to call your attention to a few things:
1.) Check out the story about bands and drill teams on the sports page. Yes, it’s overdue, but I had committed to a church youth camp trip and that took precedent. But it’s here today. It’s not just updating the UIL’s COVID-19 situation regarding bands, drill teams and football, but also has a little volleyball thrown in, as well.
2.) For those of you who don’t like us without Chit-Chat Corner on the lifestyles page, Linda K. is back, and she’s on page 3 today. She had a trip to Oklahoma, which she talks about today, and she’s been absent a bit. But she’s back. Enjoy the Chit-Chat read.
3.) Congratulations to Dani Moreno, winner of the Chevrolet Cruze, courtesy of Kilgore College and Patterson Chevrolet (see our coverage on page 1).
4.) All children should have good shoes to start school. The Rotary Club is helping for yet another year to do just that. Read our story on page 2.
IT DIDN’T MAKE it into sports today, but Lee Livesay, Kilgore High alum and BassMaster fisherman, is competing this weekend in the Bassmaster Elite series on Lake Champlain in Plattsburgh, N.Y.
Check out coverage of that fishing tournament, the best fishermen in the world, on ESPN2 and its online presence, ESPN3, at various times today and Sunday.
THIS, FROM THE CITY of Kilgore: There are three openings on the planning and zoning board and seven vacancies on the zoning board of adjustment. Anyone interested should contact Carol Windham at (903) 988-4113.
Planning and zoning board duties include exercising control over platting and subdividing land within the corporate limits of the city and within an area extending one and a half miles beyond the corporate limits; making and amending the master plan for the physical development of the city; and recommending to the city council proposed zoning regulations and land use plan, and its approval or disapproval of proposed future changes in the zoning plan.
Zoning board of adjustment duties include hearing and deciding appeals where it is alleged there might be an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by an administrative official in the enforcement of the zoning ordinance.
Whew, that was a mouthful.
A LITTLE BIRD tells me the new Popeyes franchise, located along U.S. Highway 259 between Brookshires and Walgreens Pharmacy, will be open within about a week and a half.
I’M ALSO HEARING that Kilgore Main Street has some news, and well, here it is, courtesy of the Kilgore Main Street Facebook page.
Grants of $5,000 to $15,000 will be awarded on a competitive and first-come, first-serve basis. If a business in Historic Downtown Kilgore is interested in applying and needs assistance, let Kilgore Main Street know and they can provide support.
