fire

Kilgore police said roads around Industrial Boulevard were opening on Friday.

Kilgore police said Friday morning that a fire near Industrial Boulevard was contained and slowly burning itself out — and that many roads in the area were starting to be re-opened.

"The fire at Kilgore Recycling is continuing to burn, but the smoke plume is much lower," the department posted around 9:15 a.m. "The city street department is in the process of removing barricades to reopen Industrial Blvd."

The city had shut down the area yesterday as they battled the fire. Residents in the southern portion of town, south of Harris Street, were asked to shelter in place, closing windows and doors, overnight because of the large industrial fire.

Kilgore High School's Thursday night football games were cancelled, but head coach Clint Fuller confirmed Friday morning that the varsity game against Athens Friday night would take place.
