Recent wet weather has delayed repairs and renovations at the city pool, pushing its season opener to (most likely) mid-summer.
Annual swim lesson sessions are being moved to Meadowbrook Golf & Event Center.
According to City of Kilgore Special Event Coordinator Sonya Trout, city crews aim to have the public pool open in time for a free ‘splash day’ in early July in conjunction with the community Fourth of July Extravaganza event, set once again at Kilgore City Park.
“We are hopeful that the pool will be ready in time for Fourth of July,” B.J. Owen said in a press release this week. According to the city’s special services director, “there could be the possibility of it not being ready until mid or even end of July, it really depends on how these renovations come along.”
The ongoing work includes a new deck, a lounge area, LED color-changing lights, additional ADA accessibility and the restoration of the pool’s original porthole lights.
While that work continues, the city will still be offering swimming lessons, scheduling three one-week sessions at Meadowbrook’s open-to-the-public pool. Swim lessions will begin the week of June 11.

In the meantime, “Kilgore always has a lot happening and summer won’t be any different,” Trout said. “The library has an excellent summer reading program, Kilgore College offers a number of summer camps and, of course, the Lazy Splash Ranch will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.”
