Members of the Ensign James Luna Chapter of the General Society of the War of 1812 met February 16, 2019 for their first meeting of the 2019 year.

President Bill Sekel welcomed all to the meeting and then introduced the guest speaker, Reverend Don Byrd of Whitehouse, Texas. Reverend Byrd is a retired minister of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) serving churches in Tennessee and Texas. He has served as interim minister in Kilgore at the First Christian Church.

Reverend Byrd spoke about several historical facts that occurred during the War of 1812. He strummed his guitar and sang “The Battle of New Orleans”.

The War of 1812 was not a large and devastating war but it did establish the USA as a full-fledged nation in the eyes of the world. The War of 1812 brought the USA the respect the Revolutionary War established on a tentative basis. The war brought us our National Anthem “The Star-Spangled Banner” which was written at Fort McHenry during the war.

These new chapter officers were inducted including President Gene Pilgrim, Vice President John Bolton, Secretary-Treasurer Charles Luna and Registrar Harry Fife.

We invite any male who can trace his family history to a family member who served or supported the War of 1812 to apply for membership. If interested, help is available. Contact John Bolton by calling 903-988-1591.
