Silver screen fans will satisfy sweet tooths at Texan Valentine's Day

Anyone looking to treat their sweetheart will find an array of desserts waiting at the Texan Theater next week as the Reel East Texas Film Festival hosts a Valentine’s Day screening of “Casablanca.”

Admission is free during two Wednesday night showings at 225 S. Kilgore St. The nonprofit film festival will accept donations during the event, investing the proceeds in ongoing renovation projects at the historic venue.

In addition to the classic romance from 1942, Reel East Texas supporters are helping emphasize the Valentine’s Day theme. Jack Ryan’s Steak & Chophouse is furnishing chocolate-covered strawberries for the evening, and volunteer Lynn Peery is baking a wide range of sweets available for purchase.

The night’s dessert menu includes Italian Cream Cake, Chocolate Cream Cheese Tunnel Cake, Decadent Fudge, salted caramel chocolate cookies, cream cheese pound cake (with cherry or strawberry topping), chocolate pie and buttermilk pie.

All proceeds from the Valentine’s Bake Sale (which begins at 4 p.m. at the Texan) will also be used in upcoming projects at the South Kilgore Street theater.

The night’s feature will run at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Open to couples and singles alike, the Valentine’s screening of “Casablanca” is BYOB-friendly: guests are welcome to bring their own libations to the theater.
