'Dogs slip in tourney; district nearing

It was largely a quiet weekend for high school basketball teams in the News Herald’s coverage area, with the Kilgore Bulldogs facing only Van on the final day of the Wagstaff Holiday Classic, over at Tyler Junior College.

Van got past Kilgore, 61-43, and the Bulldogs are winding down the non-district portion of their schedule. Coach Jerry Timmons’ Kilgore team (5-9 on the season so far) were to play at All-Saints on Tuesday night, after the print deadline for this issue of the News Herald, and then take this weekend off. They’ll host Henderson next Tuesday, Jan. 9, and then begin District 15-4A play next Friday at Chapel Hill.

Jeremiah Haskins had 10 points to lead Kilgore in scoring. Hunter Bonnette and Deiontrae Wheat each had seven points. Elijah Williams had six. Octavian McKee had five, and Byron Templeton and Nesba Brown each had four.

Kilgore’s Lady Bulldogs have been off since a few days before Christmas. The Lady Bulldogs are 9-11 on the season and will host Spring Hill on Friday – that’s the district opener for both programs.

The Lady Bulldogs are coached by Jeff Coleman, the former Kilgore boys coach who returned to tKHS this year.
