Residents plan 13 Night Out activities

With three more National Night Out parties on the roster this year, Lt. Tony Stone’s looking forward to a busy evening Oct. 3.

Among 13 neighborhood get-togethers on tap Tuesday, there’s a slew of veterans and new hosts to boot.

“I don’t have my list all the way completed yet,” Stone said, ready to add more block parties to the 2017 map before the events get under way next week. “I enjoy doing it.”

National Night Out is sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch, spearheaded locally by KPD, to heighten awareness of crime- and drug-prevention initiatives. Local police officers, firefighters, sheriff’s deputies and other emergency responders will make the rounds of the various neighborhood parties that night.

“The most enjoyable part is going around and visiting everybody and making friends with those people who we serve.” Granted, the multi-soiree smorgasbord doesn’t hurt. There’s gumbo on the menu at one party, Stone said, brisket at another.

At least one host is spreading the word about fajitas and a taco bar aims to lure neighbors to another event. Then, of course, there are the staples: hot dogs, cookies, cakes, pies, chips, salsa and more. Whatever the neighborhood sets out.

“Some are just straight up doing a potluck. Bring your favorite and come on,” Stone said. “Everybody’s kind of doing something different than they did last year. It’s just neat what everybody’s doing.”

Most parties are set for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., spread throughout the community – in both Gregg and Rusk County – for the 34th year of the nationwide event (which, for most of the country, takes place in August; Texas beats the heat with a later date).
